Maths Society Olympiad 2025

A 5-hour, 5-topic challenge designed for curious problem-solvers

From first-years to seasoned math enthusiasts

When Math Gets Competitive

Five hours. Five topics. Infinite caffeine.
Welcome to the Math Society Olympiad 2025—where sleep is optional but problem-solving is mandatory.

If you thought math was just about sitting in class and nodding along, think again. The Math Society Olympiad brought together students from all levels to tackle five challenging mathematical categories in a marathon problem-solving session. From first-years nervously sharpening their pencils to seasoned math enthusiasts cracking their knuckles, this event proved one thing: math competitions are the ultimate spectator sport... if you're into equations instead of touchdowns.

The Day That Was

The day started at 10:00 AM with an opening ceremony that reminded everyone why they love (or love to hate) mathematics. We showcased highlights from our "Mathematics Behind" series—covering AI/ML, Poker & Game Theory, and Interstellar—because nothing says "good morning" like neural networks and black holes.

Then came the real challenge: five hours of closed-book problem-solving across five mathematical domains. No collaboration. No Googling. Just you, your brain, and a whole lot of scratch paper.

🏆 And The Winners Are...

After five hours of intense mathematical warfare, the results were in. Some solved problems that would make Euler proud. Others discovered new ways to creatively interpret "show your work." But these champions? They dominated.

The Power Girls

The Power Girls - Conquering both Computer Science Math and Medicinal Math with style

This team showed us that when it comes to algorithms and dosage calculations, four brilliant minds are better than one. They tackled discrete structures, complexity theory, probability models, and medical statistics like absolute legends.

Mpumelelo - Mastering Mathematical Physics with precision and skill

Conservation laws? Check. Differential equations? Easy. Translating physical intuition into mathematical proof? Mpumelelo made it look effortless. Someone give this person a lab coat and a Fields Medal.

Amine & Aya - Financial Mathematics Wizards

Amine & Aya

Amine & Aya - Making compound interest look cooler than it has any right to be

While the rest of us were still figuring out our student budgets, these two were optimizing portfolios and calculating risk like Wall Street pros. Interest rates? Modeled. Expected values? Maximized. Future careers in finance? Guaranteed.

🥇 Overall Champion: Rishay Gulab

Rishay Gulab - Overall Champion & Pure Math Winner, holding the trophy like he was born for this moment

Not only did Rishay dominate the Pure Math category, but he also scored the highest across all five categories.

If there's a mathematical Mount Olympus, Rishay just planted a flag on it. Congratulations to our champion!

A Standing Ovation for All Participants

Whether you won a category, solved a single problem, or spent the entire time wondering why you signed up— thank you for participating. Every attempt, every scratched-out equation, every "wait, I think I got it!" moment made this event what it was. The Math Society is lucky to have such a dedicated community of problem-solvers.

And remember: if you didn't win this time, there's always next year. Start training now.
